Update Security Settings
You need to update your router’s security settings to ensure no one gains access without permission. There are three settings you need to change on the router to secure your wireless network:
· Router login password. All routers come with a default password. You should change the password to avoid any unauthorized access.

Some of the network settings you should consider modifying include:
· Your network name, which is the name a user will select when they connect to your network. Select a name that identifies your network, especially when there are other Wi-Fi networks in your area.
· The channel your network uses to transmit data. While some routers can automatically search for an appropriate channel, you may need to change channels for enhanced performance.

Troubleshoot - A Few More Things to Consider
Resetting Your Router
Are you having trouble logging into your router? Most routers contain a Reset, Restart or Reboot button. Using the reset button could potentially reset your router to factory settings. If you have already set up the network and security settings and need to reset the router, unplug it from the power source. Give it a minute and then plug it back in.
If you do choose to use the reset button, press and hold it for 30 seconds leaving your router plugged in then allow your router to restart and then try to login again.
If a regular reset doesn't work, try the "30-30-30" reset option. Hold down the reset button for 30 seconds while the router has power. Unplug the router while continuing to hold down the button for another 30 seconds. Plug the router back into the power while holding the reset button for the last 30 seconds.
Updating Firmware
You should update your router’s firmware for better performance, faster internet speed and bug fixes. If resetting your router doesn’t fix performance issues, consider running an update.
Some routers have an automatic firmware update function built-in. Run the update function and allow the router to download and update by itself.
Certain router updates require that you use a desktop or mobile app. In other cases, you will have to update the firmware by using a web-based interface manually. To run a manual update, follow these easy steps:
· Go to the manufacturer/vendor support website and download the firmware
· If the download is in a zip file, open the file and copy the file to your desktop
· Log into your router.
· Navigate to the firmware update section. You will typically find the update section by clicking on Administration – System – Setup – Advanced/Tools
· Browse for the firmware file you just downloaded
· Select “update” or “upload” and allow the process to complete
Important notes when updating firmware
· When running an update, you should not unplug or turn off the router.
· Follow vendor instructions where provided.
· Updates may reset your router to default settings. Consider saving the settings to a file before updating your firmware.
